What books?

Thanks to our network of partners we can collect ANY book!

Any books which are not suitable to send to East Africa we can sell through our partners Better World Books to raise income to ship the ones that are.

Any books which can't be sent or sold, we recycle - no books are ever thrown into landfill.

Textbooks

Disused textbooks and reference books remain in English school storerooms for years unused, some untouched, before being thrown in the bin or pulped.

By gathering these unused books and distributing them to schools in Tanzania and Uganda we allow them to grow the minds of another generation of children.

The Tanzanian and Ugandan syllabi are based on the UK model and all secondary school classes are taught in English. The maths and science curriculum is based on the UK system so these books are perfectly suited.

Although we will collect any textbooks from your school we only send the relevant ones to East Africa.

This can significantly increase the extent to which the books are used there

The most relevant textbooks are: Key Stage 3, GCSE and A Level books in the subjects below. We also take Primary readers and A level books and university level textbooks in any subjects.

  • Physics / Chemistry / Biology / General Science. YES.
  •
  • Mathematics. YES.
  •
  • English Language. YES.
  •
  • English Literature. YES.
  •
  • Atlases / Dictionaries / Encyclopaedia etc. YES. These types of reference books are highly sought after. Please do check to see how up to date they are. One example is that if an Encyclopaedia still refers to the USSR, it is probably too old to send
  •
  • Geography – YES. However, many Human Geography books are irrelevant and we cannot send anything talking about International Development or the Third World. We also advise against any Physical Geography books that are full of British or European examples.
  •
  • History / Politics / Religious Education etc – NO. These books cannot be sent to Tanzania and Uganda as the contents are often biased and not relevant to their syllabi
  •
  • Medical textbooks  - YES. Working with The Laura Case Trust and MedSin we collect medical textbooks for use in medical schools in East Africa. See the Medical Book Drive page for full details of suitable books.

We also take donations of sports and stationery equipment. Why not ask everyone at your work/school to bring in a football or netball. Or a pencil case with a pen and a pencil.

Please make sure any second hand items are clean and good quality.
